Around the World in 14 Days

The First Ward Hair Studio / Tulsa / T. Karn Imports Pop-Up

It's time for yet another pop-up shop, and we promise you won't want to miss this one.

T. Karn Imports has set up shop in the space below the salon for the first two weeks in May. Currently based out of Telluride, CO, owner Tesha Karn has returned to her hometown to show off her incredible inventory of worldly goods for you and your home. Sourced from all over the globe, this collection is full of one-of-a-kind, handcrafted items you won't find anywhere else in Tulsa. We're thinking its the perfect place (and time) to pick up something for Mother's Day, recent graduates, or just to pretend like you're on vacation.

A Lamber-ton of Fun

Until recently, a strange video on The First Ward's Instagram account held the record for 'most likes' by a landslide. We know James is the cute guy to look at around here, but we think it was the production and direction by Jeremy Lamberton that made all of your little fingers do that double-tapping.

Jeremy gets us...and he happens to be one of our favorite collaborators, animal wranglers, and friend to boot. Read along to get a bit more insight into what makes this die-hard Tulsan tick.

The First Ward / Tulsa Overground Interview 2016

Give us the elevator pitch for Tulsa Overground. What is it and why should people attend?

Tulsa Overground’s mission is to entertain, educate, challenge, inspire and unite Tulsans through the arts. This year the festival takes place March 24-27. We’re now both a film and music festival so we’ll have movies and bands playing simultaneously all weekend long at multiple venues. We’ve also expanded our program to include cutting edge virtual reality experiences, a video art gallery, a Mazeppa tribute and a big, special presentation from Crispin Glover. He’s also staying for the entire festival so don’t be surprised if you see him walking around the streets of downtown Tulsa. As usual there will be huge after parties and lots of special guest entertainers sprinkled throughout.

Go to tulsaoverground.com for tickets and schedule.

Congratulations! You have been a client of Jessica’s longer than anyone else. Why?

Jessica always delivers, with her scissors! I’ve been her client for 18 years now, we were both teenagers when she started cutting my hair. I’ve always thought of her as an artist. She's so talented. Jessica used to call me her most high maintenance client. But I’ve mellowed out since my hair started thinning.
The only person to cut my hair before Jessica was a lady named Cheryl. Her salon was in a strip mall next to a Bill & Ruth’s. I used to have a gap between my front teeth and she told me it meant I was good in bed—she had a gap too. She would rub her boobs against my head sometimes and my hair cuts were always asymmetrical, I think because she was slightly cross-eyed. So needless to say, I was looking for a change. And from the first appointment Jessica treated me like a friend. She always had a cool, distinct sense of style. Now James and Jessica are like family. It’s all about the love!

We think about hair all day long, but it turns out you do too. You even did an entire photo series about wigs in action. Are you obsessed?

Maybe. The photography started when my grandmother died and I found a chest full of old lady wigs and started incorporating them into a lot of my work. I just liked the way a wig looked when it sitting on the floor, hanging from a wall or dangling from a string. At the time of the wig series I was into photographing inanimate objects like people… This was back in college. I ended up giving my favorite print to Jessica. It was a shower scene.

You had the smallest mini-donkeys in the region. You had some of the best racing pigeons in the world. And you have a dog with human eyes. Can you talk to animals?

Not like my brother Jeff. He has a uncommon gift for animal husbandry. He is one of the top racing pigeons fanciers in the USA and his legend is growing. But yes, we did used to have 23 miniature donkeys. I never had to mow the lawn or fertilize.

If you could cast and direct the biopic of The First Ward, who would play us?

Who’s the actor that played E.T.? That guy.

Living the Dream in 2016

The First Ward Hair Studio Tulsa Blog Daruma Doll January 2016

Well the holidays were a long time ago, and the weather seems to be telling us to go into hibernation. As usual, we're doing the opposite of what we should. Instead, we've been going a mile a minute and taking care of business. Last year surpassed all of our expectations, and we're doing all we can to make sure 2016 is even better.

Here is a little thank you note to anyone you shopped at our pop-up, a potential business opportunity for you, and some tips if you decided to change your hair this year.

Hygge Thanks You

The First Ward Hair Studio Tulsa Blog Hygge Pop-Up Shop January 2016

Before we truly dive into the new year, we want to thank anyone who visited our Hygge Pop-Up Shop.  We had a hell of a good time spending the holidays with you and connecting Tulsa with some of our favorite designers. The shop was definitely an experiment for us, and we couldn't be happier with how it turned out. More than anything, we learned just how much potential there is in Downtown Tulsa, and we can't wait to continue adding to that.

In case you missed the shop, we've added a few of our Hygge favorites to the retail shelves of the salon. We have Grown Alchemist skincare in stock, which our skin thanks us for every day. There are also a few great home items, including bottle openers, blankets, and a felt whale with a party hat. Also, if there's anything you remember from the shop but don't see, just ask us! Chances are we can find a way to get it to you.

Now that you've filled in the eye of your new daruma doll, we hope you remember to keep things cozy and hygge as the temperature drops. There's a reason all those Scandinavian countries are the happiest in the world. They've made a cultural pact to not let the cold get them down. It's a damn hard thing to do, but we're willing to give it a try this year (as long as Jessica continues to host soup night at her place).

The First Ward Hair Studio Tulsa Blog Available Pop-Up Space January 2016

While we take the next couple months to develop our next great idea, our downstairs shop space will be vacant. Within that time, we are interested in leasing the space for classes, workshops, and weekend pop-ups. Possible ideas include: a bartending class, flower shop, and psychic readings. We're always down to collaborate, so please email us if you have an idea!
