Wanna see something spooky? Check out our gallery below to see some of our past experimental haircuts. The most frightening thing is that each of us thought we looked pretty cool at the time (especially and most deservingly, James). And while we cringe a little at each look, it should be no surprise that we like to get weird with hair. And really, you're all lucky we tested the worst on ourselves.
The First Ward is always up to something. Stay up to date with news from our blog, including local Tulsa highlights, hair tips, and tales from our #tfwadventures.
You’ve let her wash your hair and scrub your brains, but what do you really know about TFW styling assistant Andrea Piper? In honor of her one-year anniversary at the salon (yowza!), we thought it was time to give her the spotlight and let you know where this goth angel came from.
Like a true fantasy heroine, Andrea came to Tulsa by way of the Valley of the Sun (Phoenix) as a social-worker-by-day, makeup-genius-by-night (that’s like a costume?). She was saving lives left and right, but realized her own life was lacking something. She decided to combine her powers and started pursuing a job in hair and makeup more seriously. After she worked at MAC Cosmetics and studied at Paul Mitchell, she found us, and we’re lucky she did. She has so many cute animal videos we've never seen before.
Name: Andrea (rhymes with Ham-dree-ah)
List all the colors you have dyed your hair.
Green, purple, red, orange, blue (currently), early 2000s foil blonde. The first color I ever did was pink when I was thirteen. My mom and I did pink highlights through a cap.
What color is next?
This morning I googled “witch hair” to learn what kind of hair a witch would legitimately have. Lots of texture, long, natural and wild. That’s what I want next.
If you could have the hair of any animated character, who would it be and why?
Wonder Woman. So much body and shine! It’s also has a blue tint sometimes. If my blue hair looked as lush as that, I’d keep it forever.
What was the last song stuck in your head?
Ever since Sarah played “Return of the Mack” in the salon (months ago), I hear it everywhere and it’s always stuck in my head. Did you know Burger King is using it in a commercial now?
You love have two little dogs named Toby and Akiko.
What do you think their voices sound like?
Toby is very grumpy and aloof, he would sound like Eeyore. Akiko is the opposite. She’s very girly and sensitive and dainty.
What does Phoenix have that Tulsa needs?
More cultural food options spread throughout the city.
Your family owns an Italian restaurant. If you were a pasta noodle, which would you be and why?
All the best dishes are with penne pasta. I’d also probably be penne because I’m short and I absorb what’s around me. I adapt to my surroundings.
Describe your favorite tattoo on your body.
Probably the cat church from Pet Sematary or the Beetlejuice tombstone.
If you were a phoenix, what would you do in your next life?
In college I wanted to be an anthropologist or paleontologist. I wanted to study cultures and dig up dinosaur bones.
How does your social work background affect your life as a hairdresser?
I think it definitely improved my listening skills. Most people probably don’t think you need to be a good listener and empathetic as a hairdresser, but I disagree. It helps you connect with your client.
Chat her up during your next visit to see James or Jessica. Or, if you have an event coming up, we can set up a time for a makeup application or blow-out. During Andrea’s apprenticeship, she will also be honing her skills through classes, and classes need models. We’re currently looking for ladies interested in chopping their locks for a pixie cut and men that want to grow their short cuts out.

It seems like it was only yesterday that we were all asking each other, "Why is some hot blonde suddenly stalking all of us online?" After basically inviting herself to the party, Audrey Thomas quickly proved to be more than just a Pinterest-famous flaxen-hair bombshell. She's an incredible baker, joke-teller, dog mom, and a true wizard at hair-doing. Most days we can hardly believe she's real. Audrey completed our team when we didn't even realize anything was missing.
For those who missed the memo, Audrey is having twins, and their due date is just around the corner. While we know we'll never fill the hole in our collective heart after Audrey's last day, we are excited for her to start her new career as the world's coolest stay-at-home mom.
Audrey only has a couple weeks left working with us, but we promise to do our best to help you though this transition. We'll have all of her notes and charts directing our crew to stay on top of your super chic 'dos.
Please don't hesitate to call or email us with any questions, concerns, comments, or party invitations.
2017: A SALON ODYSSEY
Hey, hairbangers. What a year that was. 2016 was pretty good to our little salon. So good, in fact, that we forgot to tell you anything about it. In case you're curious, here are some photos that tell you everything you need to know:
We are keeping the momentum going straight into 2017 and look forward to sharing what we're up to. Stay tuned in the coming months. The First Ward is going to have our most surprising, exciting, and controversial year yet...oh, wait...that's this season of The Bachelor. But really, we're going to have giveaways, parties, surprise guests, and someone is opening a new business downstairs. On top of that, we've been working on hair education that's sending us over the moon!
JAMES AND JESSICA DIP BENEATH LASERS
It's pretty well-known that we like to throw a party, we love lasers, and Jessica loves 90s techno. With that in mind, the Day for Night festival in Houston was clearly our party mecca, and we had to make our pilgrimage. So Jessica and James took one for the team and gathered a few tricks to put in our back pocket for future parties. Day for Night is an immersive music and art festival, showcasing mind-blowing acts from around the globe. We're still in awe of how incredible this fest was. Who wants to join us for Day for Night 3 in December 2017?
REMINDER: Jessica is going to be out of the salon from January 20th-February 14th. If you need an appointment during those dates, we can happily schedule you with another stylist or find JB's soonest availability.
Cheers to the new year!
With a couple new additions to the First Ward family this last year, we figured it was finally time to update the Team page on our website. But because we have a "Go Big or Go Home" approach to everything we do, we decided to update the entire website instead.
As you have a look around, make sure you first read about our (relatively) new stylist Audrey, who is a highlight mastermind, and our project manager Sarah (we promise she works here). These ladies successfully survived the hazing phase, and now we barely remember the days without them. Plus, with two more on our squad, we've increased the number of weird ideas by fifty percent. Everybody, watch out.
